Sure, you’d expect to see the first two at a game software company, but the latter isn’t quite as common. Still, geeks love a good party as much as the next person, and they’re more than willing to play the part, so the first annual Windows Gaming employees’ Rock Band tournament brought out the wildest — and the weirdest — in my colleagues. And now, with the photos off the camera and some semblance of normal hearing finally crawling back to my battered ears, I invoke the true spirit of Rock and Roll by taking a risk that might cost me my day job.
Because, really, who could resist posting this photo of Games for Windows general manager Chris Early and his posse of high-level directors — Rod Toll, Vlad Cole, and Scott Hartley — practicing their killer stage moves before facing the contest judges?
Chris is the one with the temporary [...]

I just finished hanging out with hundreds of hardcore Windows gamers at the NVIDIA GeForce LAN 4 event in Alameda, California. I was only there for a handful of hours, and really before things truly got started (most people start showing up after work/school), and would be very curious to see how things develop over the next 48 hours, but I at least got a taste of what they going to be up to.
The event lasts for two straight days, with food and drink provided as well as air mattresses for those not hardcore enough to power through. Attendees got a copy of Crysis, and many of them were playing it for the first time on their own rigs that they brought in. NVIDIA also had some demo stations set up playing Crysis on super high-end machines with dual GeForce 8800 GTX cards in SLI – pretty stunning stuff.
I [...]

I just wanted to let you guys know about two more Games for Windows titles hitting store shelves this week. It’s pretty exciting to see some of these things hitting stores finally. After drooling over “Crysis” for so long, and playing the heck out of the graphically lucious demo, I’m really looking forward to getting into that nano suit and taking the game through its paces. Also, “Kane & Lynch: Dead Men” comes out today, and supports Games for Windows — LIVE. Sign me up for some more Achievements earned with mouse and keyboard!
Here’s the mail we sent out to folks today. Enjoy!

This week, John and Tony are away, so Nelson and I have free reign MUHAHAHA!
We did a little different recording, this was a straight shot, no editing, talk for 30-35 minutes and then stop. Let us know how you like it as it was INCREDIBLY easy on me to edit it - just add music. An unfortunate side-effect is that there are no outros this week.
Also, with the new Zune Client currently unable to edit metadata tags *ahem*, I had to do it elsewhere, I apologize if our tags are now screwed up - let us know if anyone has issues.

We’re happy that these friggin’ COG have something better to do than annoy us here in the office. Now that Gears for Windows is out, they can leave us alone. Here is our latest video showing just how much of a pain they are to work with…
Also, for those PC gamers who didn’t know about it, we have a monthly Games for Windows newsletter with a bunch of information, and some good deals!
You can get $10 off of Gears for the PC at Best Buy, you can enter to win a Toshiba gaming laptop, AND you get a pretty cool Gears of War screensaver just for signing up. Not too shabby.

Today is a great day for Windows gamers! Gears of War finally ships on Windows today, with full support for Games for Windows — LIVE and, with Windows Vista, DirectX 10! The game retails for an MSRP of $49.99, and for that you get five new campaign chapters, a new “King of the Hill” multiplayer mode, three new multiplayer maps, a robust game editor, and incredible high-res graphics that take even the Xbox 360 visuals to the next generation. Plus, the game is packed with all the content previously released on the Xbox 360 – seven multiplayer maps and the “Annex” game mode.
You’re probably anxious to play, but wanted to let you know of a small problem (fortunately, with an easy fix). When you first play Gears of War for Windows, an automatic update to Games for Windows — LIVE will be downloaded. But after the update is downloaded, you’re [...]

The Games for Windows version of Viva Piñata is on its way to manufacturing, and will begin appearing in stores in the U.S. on November 6, followed by Europe beginning Nov 16, and January 18 in Japan. You just can’t have enough Piñata goodness, and having it installed on kid’s computer means my daughter will have a shot at building her garden without fighting with yher brother over the Xbox. And having it installed on my laptop means I’m just a few flutterscotches away from another Achievement, even when I’m in an important meeting, uh, taking notes…
Viva Piñata will be available for both Windows XP and Windows Vista, and because it’s officially a “Games for Windows” title, it offers easy installation, reliability standards, and support for key features of Windows Vista like the Games Explorer and Parental Controls. And because it supports ”Games for Windows-LIVE,” you can contact other gamers to lend a hand [...]

Over the weekend I was playing ‘Gears of War for Windows’ (which releases next week) and I noticed that there are a few new Games for Windows only Gamer Pictures available, so I took this screenshot from the Guide while playing Gears. You can see there are 13 exclusive pictures you can choose from after you install the game. I have no idea why they did not include any new Gears pictures. Seems like that would make more sense, right?
In case you were curious as to where I got my latest Gamer picture, there is your answer.

Gears of War for Windows ships on Tuesday November 6th in the US, but just because it arrives after Halloween doesn’t mean you can’t get into the mood now!
You may have seen the Pumpkin Templates on Xbox.com, but those aren’t the only choices for you to use when carving your pumpkin this Halloween.
You can turn just about any photo into a Pumpkin stencil by making it black and white, and adjusting the contrast/brightness to highlight the lights and darks. There are some pretty good tutorials over at Photoshop Tips, and Home Logic Halloween.
In the spirit of Halloween, we have provided a few images (top) to make stencils out of (we gave you a head start on the bottom) in hopes that we can see some cool Gears of War themed pumpkins.
We have a few incentives to give out to folks who do a great job on the Gears of War Pumpkin [...]

One of the great benefits of working for Microsoft is the opportunity we have to work with people in other parts of the organization. The Games for Windows team worked very closely with the folks running Windows client PR this past week, as we participated in an event that showcased not only great consumer uses for new services launching for Windows Live and Windows Vista in the coming months, but were also able to talk about the great things we’re doing to make gaming easier, safer, and more fun.
Now, if that sounds like marketing speak, you have to forgive me. I’ve just spent the last three days in New York City talking to press about the Games for Windows brand, what we’re doing with Games for Windows – LIVE, and showing some screenshots of DirectX 10. Why, you ask? Because we’re still telling the story about how we’re [...]
