Along with the announcement about the new version of Windows Mobile, version 6.1, it was also announced that Live Search for Windows Mobile and Blackberry is going to be updated, too. The updates include mapping contacts, Virtual Earth integration, voice input, and weather. The ability to map contacts means you can see the locations of those in your address book on a map so you are then able to easily get directions to that location. The Virtual Earth integration will offer you the ability to make “map collections,” or custom maps that you or your friends create. The maps are made on your PC prior to viewing them in Live Search. For Blackberry users, the new version of Live Search will offer voice input, something that previously only Windows Mobile users had the ability to use. With voice input, you only need speak a command in order to find businesses or [...]

SlideIt – A Different Way to Enter Text

Sarah Perez article, brought to you using rss feeds. I found it informative and I think you will too.
Here's some of the article
This is interesting - a company called SlideIt is offering you a different way to enter text on your Windows Mobile phone. Instead of picking up your stylus when entering text, you just drag it from one letter to the next without picking it up. In this way, you save…what? Microseconds? It’s definitely different, but I’m not sure it’s better. However, you can also use SlideIt do do tapping with prediction - something that might be more useful. As you tap the words out, a list of words appears on the left for you to choose from. A graffiti box is available for any characters that are not on the keyboard. You can see more of SlideIt’s features here or watch a video demonstration of SlideIt in action here. And if you want to give it a try yourself, the download is available here.

Twitter App for Windows Mobile

Sarah Perez article, brought to you using rss feeds. I found it informative and I think you will too.

Twobile is a brand-new app, still in beta, designed to be a Twitter client for Windows Mobile devices. The app is small - only 200K - so keeping it always running shouldn’t hog up too much memory. The Twobile app offers many different features, each in a separate tab. You can switch between your friends timeline, your messages, your replies, etc. For active twitters, this may mean a lot of switching needs to be done, but no worse than any other app. However, the layout for viewing tweets does make good use of the screen’s real estate by displaying one-line views of the tweets. You can download the software for free from here.

A recent post on LifeHacker mentioned a little program called MPlayer, which allows you to play nearly any media file (like RealAudio/Video, Ogg, & M4A) on your Windows Mobile 5 or 6 phone. However, the post mentioned the program was a rough port of a Linux version of the app, and  was somewhat of a killer on processor (and thereby, battery) usage. However, a commenter mentioned another program called Conduits Pocket Player, which they liked better, so I thought it was worth checking out. The Conduits Pocket Player, although not free (it’s $19.95), supports all Windows Mobile devices and offers a myriad of features. The Pocket Player supports MP3, WMA, WMV1 2, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, WAV, Protected WMA, u-Law, A-Law, AU, &ADPCM WAV formats. It also has a Media Browser menu system with touch scrolling & gesture support; a Media Library with ratings, an auto-imports up to 1000+ tracks; an [...]

A must-have for Windows Mobile users is the Live Search app for mobile devices. If you need to search for a place, get directions, or find what else is in the area, Live Search for Windows Mobile can really be a lifesaver. After installation, to use Live Search, you just click on the Live Search icon from the device’s Start Menu, and the application launches. From the main screen, you can easily navigate to select the city of your choice by drilling down by geographic region and alphabetical listings. To find a business or category, you enter in the information you need to find in the search box and your results will display on a map. You can use the routing feature to get directions from point A to point B, and, in major cities, you can even see what traffic is like on your selected route. Roadblocks and delays [...]
